Steps to Become a Police Officer: What Are They?
When you decide to become a police officer, it also means that you have decided to change your life. Getting into this career as a public servant is such a highly competitive process that involves a number of steps to take. The primary duty of a police officer is to fight against crimes and to protect the people at all cost. Being a police officer may be very stressful since you have to work in case of emergencies, round the clock. But, it is such a rewarding job.
The lives of police officers are always at stake due to the dangerous situations they have to face, but a lot of people respect and obey them. A law enforcement job is challenging. But before becoming one, there are numerous steps to become a police officer.
- Education
This is a very important factor when you decide to join the police department. If you have completed the basic high school education, then you are an eligible candidate to become a police officer. However, it is required to have a bachelor or associates degree. There are quite a number of colleges that offer career education associated to criminal justice programs. These said programs include the knowledge about legal matters, human behavior, computer systems and other subjects that deal about the roles and responsibilities of a police officer.
- Physical and mental fitness
One of the most important steps to become a police officer is to undergo several tests especially on physical and mental aspects. Doing daily exercises and outdoor sports would help in conditioning the body. Since all applicants need to take a physical exam to assess their strength, eyesight, nimbleness and hearing capabilities. Aspiring applicants are also required to pass a background check. Those people who have acquired records of violating traffic rules, drug convictions, and any other crimes are most likely to be rejected. As early as now, be sure that you stay away from those illegal activities if you want to become a police officer in the future.
- Civil Service Assessment
By the time all has been done and your application is ready, you are required to take a civil service assessment. This may be quite easy for some people since there are study guides provided that could help one gain a high score. This is usually administered by the police department you are applying to.
- Lie Detector Test
If you want to become a police officer, you have to pass a lie detector test after your physical exam. The interviews will be conducted by the police department officials. While there are quite a number of steps to become a police officer, this seems to be the easiest one for some. If you pass the test, you will be sent immediately to the police academy for training. The training will take for about three months to one year.
Due to the increasing number of crimes, police officers are on high demand today. There may be numerous steps to become a police officer that you should take but you will just realize that it is all worth it.

To Enforce Education: A History of the Founding Years of the United States Office of Education $9.94 To Enforce Education constitutes a portion of a larger history, that of federal involvement in public educational policy and practice, and the cycles of action and reaction which abetted and retarded nineteenth-century school development, the complementary roles of cultural centrism and urban growth in promoting school bureaucratization, and the impact of Civil War and Reconstruction on education. The author has assumed this context in order to focus on the beginnings of the first effort to render American public education more effective and efficient through a federal agency. |

Obama in Office $32.87 This book offers the first scholarly assessment of President Obama and his first two years in office. Hundreds of journalistic articles and several books have appeared, but this is the first based on the original scholarship of well-established political scientists, practitioners, and journalists who have studied American political institutions and domestic and international public policy. All come together here to offer a fresh perspective on President Obama and his relationship with Congress, interest groups, and a wide variety of policy making communities. Because so much has happened to test the administration during this period, this book is not only timely but rich with new insights into the continuing great recession and its jobless recovery, TARP spending, efforts to save the automobile industry, stimulus legislation, historic health care reform along with reform in other key areas including financial regulation, education, taxation, immigration policy, climate change legislation, a historic deficit, the BP oil leak in the Gulf, and the continuation of two wars. Extreme partisanship, deadlock, and anticipation of Republican midterm electoral success have made policy making difficult despite a Democratic majority in Congress. Looking beyond the midterms, these authors consider the results of 2010, the impact of the Tea Party, and the prospects for 2012. Obama entered office in the midst of the perfect storm; will he exit at the hands of a populist tsunami or return for four more years as the teapot tempest subsides? |

Oath of Office $34.98 This book chronicles the rearing of an African-American child in the "Upsouth" during the 1950s and 1960s, and his experiences as an adult in another world-the F.B.I. The author walks the reader through many harrowing experiences; several nearly fatal, growing up in St. Louis and also with the F.B.I. His life with the F.B.I. will take you through the "urban jungles" of several U.S. cities to the tropical rainforests and islands of the Caribbean. The author details his personal experiences with segregation coupled with lessons taught by his family and older friends. Highlighted early in the book is the author’s controversial admission to college at the age of eighteen. His fascinating career covers 21 1/2 years of complex federal investigations and dangerous undercover operations. The Education Of An Accidental Ceo: My Journey From The Trailer Park To The Corner Office $9.89 David Novak one of today’s most engaging, unconventional, and successful business leaders lived in thirty-two trailer parks in twenty-three states by the time he reached the seventh grade. He sold encyclopedias door to door, worked as a hotel night clerk, and took a job as a $7,200-a-year advertising copywriter with the hopes of maybe one day becoming a creative director. Instead, he became head of the world’s largest restaurant company at the ripe old age of forty-seven. While David never went to business school, he did learn from the greatest of teachers experience and plenty of other very smart people as well: Magic Johnson on the secret to teamwork, Warren Buffett on what he looks for in the companies he buys, John Wooden on ego, and Jack Welch on one thing he’d do over. Now he wants to share with you what he discovered about getting ahead and getting noticed; motivating people and turning businesses around; building winning teams and running a global company of nearly one million people; and always staying true to yourself. The Education of an Accidental CEO is filled with David Novak’s street-smart wisdom: From his formative years… Walking through your anxieties Avoiding the poison of stereotypes Staying "right-sized" Breaking through the clutter From his years as an ad executive and chief marketing officer … How not to roll over like Fluffy the dog Seeing yourself as a brand When to pull the plug on the Super Bowl As the COO of Pepsi Cola and then as president of KFC and Pizza Hut … Why a gold watch can have less value than a floppy rubber chicken Knowing when "the answers are in the building" Knowing when to do nothing What it takes to revitalze a company And as CEO of Yum! Brands, Inc. … How to "shock the system" How to avoid the slow-no’s Managing two up and two down David Novak’s ideas for building an entire culture around reward and recognition getting everyone from division presidents to dishwashers to buy into recognizing the achievements of others is studied by other companies and discussed here in great detail. Whether you are the CEO of a global conglomerate or a budding entrepreneur, there is something here that will help you get where you want to go. From the Hardcover edition. |

Office Hours: Activism and Change in the Academy $3.94 All research content shall be under university surveillance. Academic freedom must take second place to security from terrorism. Only disciplines that pay their way will earn the right to survive in the university of the future. Within a few years, Cary Nelson and Stephen Watt argue, higher education as we have known it may largely cease to exist. Universities are increasingly profit-driven, and the faculty seems increasingly passive in the face of political and economic pressures. Office Hours argues that it’s not enough to blame market forces or the indifference of politicians: academics can often be their own worst enemies. In a series of stinging analyses, Nelson and Watt examine the current sorry state of higher education, The second half of the volume offers "alternative futures" for the academy, visions that involve academic organizations, public outreach through the internet, faculty unionization, and campus organizing. "Office Hours "is a roll-up-your-sleeves look at the avoidable disaster facing the modern university. |

Precepting Medical Students in the Office $7.49 "Medical knowledge and training have evolved dramatically over the centuries, but the tradition of dedicated physicians sharing their knowledge, skills, experience, and wisdom with the next generation of young medical students is still vital. Much of today’s medical training is of a technical nature, but in reality physicians are as much artists as technicians, and the art of medicine is a skill that cannot be learned in a classroom. As Hippocrates put it a long time ago, the doctor who despises the knowledge acquired by the ancients is foolish." — from the Foreword, by Stuart P. Embury, M.D. As medical education curricula continue to evolve, many medical schools are implementing programs that allow students to spend a portion of their time observing primary care physicians in their offices. Currently, more than 20,000 physicians are precepting medical students in this way, and the number will grow as more and more educational programs attempt to move medical student experiences into the community. In Precepting Medical Students in the Office, Paul M. Paulman, M.D., Jeffrey L. Susman, M.D., and Cheryl A. Abboud, M.P.A., bring together experts in the field of family medicine to provide a how-to guide to educating medical students in the patient-care setting. The contributors cover subjects that range from defining the scope of preceptorship to managing the costs, working with medical schools and local hospitals, integrating the student into the practice, providing feedback, problem learners, and teaching styles. Section topics: Introduction to Community-Based Precepting Characteristics and Needs of Learners Clinical Teaching Organization of the Preceptorship Curriculum Relationships to Medical Schools and Other Agencies Legal and Ethical Aspects of Precepting Faculty Benefits and Resources |

DEDICATION To my father and mother who exemplified, In their day and generation, all that is best in modern education THERE WAS A CHILD WENT FORTH by Walt Whitman There was a child went forth every day, And the first object he lookd upon, that object he became, And that object became part of him for the day, or a certain part of the day, Or for many years, or stretching cycles of years. The early lilacs became part of this child, And grass and white and red morning-glories, and white and red clover, and the song of the phoebe-bird, And the Third-month lambs, and the sows pink-faint litter, and the mares foal, and the cows calf, And the noisy brood of the barn-yard, or by the mire of the pond-side, And the fish suspending themselves so curiously below there, and the beautiful curious liquid, And the water-plants with their graceful flat heads, all became part of him. The hurrying tumbling waves, quick-broken crests, slapping, The strata of color d clouds, the long bar of maroon-tint, away solitary by itself, the spread of purity it lies motionless in, The horizons edge, the flying sea-crow, thefragrance of salt marsh and shore mud, These became part of that child who went forth every day, and who now goes, and will always go forth every day. Published with the special permission of the copyright owners The David McKay Co. Philadelphia. PREFACE THE small rural school is a persistent problem in the field of education. Originally the pattern of public education in America it has yielded slowly to reform. Reforms came to it first in a program of consolidation, an administrative device which developed large teaching units from small ones. Be ginning slowly in the early years of the twentieth century the consolidation movement has gathered enough momentum to establish consolidated schools in every state in the union. In 1928 there were approximately 17,000 such schools scattered throughout the several states. As efficacious as this reform has proven to be, however, small schools exist in the present and in large numbers. In 1934, according to the United States Office of Education, 13,024,021 children attended rural schools. Of this number 10,821,777 attended elementary rural schools and 2,202,244 attended rural high schools. The school buildings to serve this large number of American youth are designed, on the whole, for small teaching units. In 1934, 64.9 per cent |

More than 1 million students were excluded from public schools, and another 3.5 million did not receive appropriate services. Twenty-seven years later, changes in how we view people with disabilities and the potential of children with disabilities have resulted in increased access to public schools and special educational services for an entire generation. Yet, these gains only reveal part of the story. Since 1975, many of the positive effects realized by federal involvement in special education have been overshadowed by the growth in paper-work and administrative entanglements. These entanglements reduce the focus on individual child results and educational outcomes, which should be the intent of IDEA. Recommendation – Replace Federal istrators. Curriculum Development for Medical Education: A Six-Step Approach $7.6 At a time when society is demanding accountability from the medical education system and residency review committees are demanding written curricula, this book offers a practical, yet theoretically sound, approach to curriculum development in medicine. The approach described in Curriculum Development for Medical Education has evolved over the past ten years, during which time the authors have taught curriculum development and evaluation skills to faculty and fellows in the Johns Hopkins University Faculty Development Program for Clinician-Educators. Program participants have used the techniques described here to develop curricula on topics as diverse as advance directives, office gynecology for the generalist, a renal elective for internal medicine residents, and an office-based preceptorship for first-year medical students. Short, practical, and generic in its approach, the book begins with an overview of a six-step approach to curriculum development. Each succeeding chapter then covers one of the six steps: problem identification; targeted needs assessment; goals and objectives; education methods; implementation; and evaluation. Additional chapters address curriculum maintenance, enhancement, and dissemination. Throughout, examples are used to illustrate major points. An appendix provides the reader with a selected list of published and unpublished resources on funding, faculty development, and already developed curricula. Curriculum Development for Medical Education is designed for use by program directors and others who are responsible for the educational experiences of medical students, residents, fellows, and clinical practitioners. |

William Friday: Power, Purpose, and American Higher Education $10.99 Few North Carolinians are as well known or as widely respected as William Friday. Although he has never run for elected office, the former president of the University of North Carolina has been prominent in public affairs for decades and ranks as one of the most important American university presidents of the post-World War II era. In this comprehensive biography, William Link traces Friday’s long and remarkable career. Friday’s thirty years as president of the university, from 1956 to 1986, spanned the greatest period of growth for higher education in American history, and he played a crucial role in shaping the sixteen-campus university during that time of tumultuous social change. In the 1960s and 1970s, he confronted a series of administrative challenges, including the expansion of the university system, the evolving role of the federal government in the affairs of a public university, an intercollegiate athletics scandal, the anticommunism crusade and the Speaker Ban, and racial integration. Link also explores Friday’s influential work outside the university in American higher education, on the Carnegie Commission on the Future of American Education and the White House Task Force on Education, and in the development of the National Humanities Center and the growth of Research Triangle Park. Now retired from the university, Friday heads the William R. Kenan, Jr., Fund and the Kenan Charitable Trust. |

Excerpt: …Trends in course taking within the occupationally specific curriculum were also a matter of concern for the National Assessment of Vocational Education. Between 1982 and 1992, credits completed in the occupationally specific curriculum declined in advanced vocational courses and increased in specialty topics ( those not clearly linked to a coherent program of coursework ) ( table 2.1 ). For example, 1982 high school graduates completed an average of 1.8 credits in the first course of a sequence within the occupationally specific curriculum ( compared with 1.5 credits for 1992 graduates ), 0.9 credits in the second or higher course in a sequence ( compared with 0.7 credits ), and 0.2 credits in specialty courses ( compared with 0.4 credits ).
