What is the Naval Officer qualifying test? OAR?
Before being sent to OCS potential officers have to take a test to see if they qualify. What is the name of that test and where can I get a study guide? Can a recruiter give me the study guide or can I buy it online?
The test is called the Aviation Selection Test Batteries (ASTB); your score on the first three sections is called your Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR). An OAR of 50 or above is considered very good. If you’re an aviation candidate, you will take all six sections of the ASTB. If you’re not an aviation candidate, you’re only required to take the first three sections, but you can take all six if you think you will do well to boost your application.
You can find some study guides in bookstores/libraries — look for the books that prep for the “Military Flight Aptitude Tests” and then go to the Navy/Marine Corps section. The best study material I got came from my recruiter, but the site linked below has good gouge, a prep test, and links to a lot of online study guides. It’s a difficult test and there’s a limit to how many times you can take it, so make sure you feel adequately prepared before you take. Good luck!

Types of Naval Officers Drawn from the History of the British Navy: With Some Account of the Conditions of Naval Warfare $47.49 Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840 1914) was an American naval officer, considered one of the most important naval strategists of the nineteenth century. Royal Naval Biography: Or, Memoirs of the Services of All the Flag-Officers, Superannuated Rear-Admirals, Retired-Captains, Post-C $41.66 John Marshall (c.1784-1837) was a naval officer and biographer. He first went to sea at the age of nine, and by the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 had reached the rank of lieutenant. After the war, he started to research the lives of contemporary high-ranking naval officers, some of whose service reached as far back as 1760. These volumes, first published between 1823 and 1830, contain the results of this monumental research, and demonstrate the new ‘cult’ of the navy in the early nineteenth century. Some of the biographies were contributed by the officers themselves, with others containing private or official letters and other records. Organised according to seniority in rank, these volumes contain a wealth of fascinating information on the careers of naval officers and battles and wars in which they took part. Volume 3, Part 1, contains biographies of Post-Captains, 1824-1827. |

The Naval Chronology of Great Britain: Or, an Historical Account of Naval and Maritime Events from 1803 to 1816 $35.85 James Ralfe (fl. 1820-1829) was a historian best remembered for this comprehensive history of British naval involvement in the Napoleonic Wars. First published in 1820 and intended as a successor and continuation of Captain Isaac Schomberg’s history of the navy, Naval Chronology, Ralfe’s work is remarkably detailed, using first-hand accounts of naval engagements taken from interviews with officers and sailors in addition to contemporary official naval documents. Chronologically by year, Ralfe notes and explains major parliamentary proceedings relating to the navy, lists the serving flag officers for the given year, and describes naval battles and engagements, arranged according to location. The innovative structure of these volumes, with detailed descriptions of naval battles, provide a valuable reference for the study of the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars. Volume 3 covers 1810-1816. |

Nelson’s Officers and Midshipmen $17.98 Immortalized in literature through such characters as C. S. Forester’s ‘Horatio Hornblower’ and Patrick O’Brian’s ‘Jack Aubrey’, the officers and midshipmen of the Royal Navy during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars ran the ships that defended Great Britain against the threat of French invasion. This period saw the Royal Navy achieve its most momentous victories at the Nile, Copenhagen and Trafalgar, victories that laid the basis for a period of British naval and imperial supremacy that would last a century. The men who commanded these ships went through a long apprenticeship, often going to sea at the age of 12 or younger. They could serve for up to 60 years, progressing through the ranks in a service that rewarded success in battle and merit to a much larger extent than the contemporary British Army. This title, the companion volume to Warrior 100: " Nelson’s Sailors," describes the harsh realities of life in the Georgian Royal Navy for all ranks of officer from the lowest midshipman to the most senior admiral and covers the exploits of men such as Horatio Nelson and Thomas Cochrane who provided the basis for the fictional figures that remain so popular to this day. |

Peace Officers’ Guide to California’s Dangerous Weapons Laws $34.56 PEACE OFFICERS’ GUIDE TO CALIFORNIA’S DANGEROUS WEAPONS LAWS is fascinating reading, regardless of where you live. The laws that apply to the possession and use of dangerous weapons are both confusing and complicated. In addition, there is little consistency between those laws written decades ago and those recently enacted. This text simplifies this area of law for both the layperson and the veteran officer. Weapons are discussed and logically grouped within this book, unlike the penal code, where they are scattered throughout. It is a concept book that is in workbook form to associate both a word picture and an illustration of the topic at hand. Self-test exercises ensure retention. |

The Elements and Practice of Rigging, Seamanship, and Naval Tactics $27.65 David Steel was one of the most respected and prolific naval publishers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His publications focused on naval strategy and shipbuilding techniques. This influential four-volume work, first published in 1794, was the first comprehensive English manual of best naval practice. Designed for aspiring young officers, it established Steel’s reputation as a publisher. The book describes theoretical and practical aspects of masts, rigging, and sails, and the science of sailing. Spiritual Leadership for Church Officers: A Handbook $18 “This timely new leadership guide for the PC(USA) is written for church officers who are looking for a deepened relationship with God as they serve the church. Author Joan Gray challenges elders and deacons to see themselves as spiritual leaders and equips them to act as spiritual leaders alongside their pastors. After all, even the most dynamic and gifted pastor will be hamstrung if the congregation’s lay leaders are lethargic, conflicted, or spiritually anemic. Gray lays out a variety of leadership styles and helps leaders understand when each might be appropriate. She goes on to provide resources for dealing with interpersonal relationships in the church and identifies ways churches can create an atmosphere that is supportive of the spiritual leadership of elders and deacons. She also explores things the officers themselves can do to become more effective.” |

The Admirals: Canada’s Senior Naval Leadership in the Twentieth Century $24.14 The Admirals: Canada’s Senior Naval Leadership in the Twentieth Century fills an important void in the history of Canada’s navy. Those who carry the burden of high command have a critical niche in not only guiding the day-to-day concerns of running an armed service but in ensuring that it is ready to face the challenges of the future. Canada’s leading naval historians present analytical articles on the officers who led the navy from its foundation in 1910 to the unification in 1968. Six former Maritime Commanders provide personal reflections on command. The result is a valuable biographical compendium for anyone interested in the history of the Canadian Navy, the Canadian Forces, or military and naval leadership in general. Michael Whitby is a Senior Naval Historian at the Directorate of History and Heritage, DND, and co-author of The Official History of the Royal Canadian Navy in the Second World War. Richard H. Gimblett is an historian and defence policy analyst, and Research Fellow with the Centre for Foreign Policy Studies at Dalhousie University. Among many other publications he has authored major studies of Canada’s role in the 1990-91 Persian Gulf War and in the War Against Terrorism. Peter Haydon is a Senior Research Fellow with the Centre for Foreign Policy Studies at Dalhousie University in Halifax. A long time commentator and analyst of Canadian naval affairs, his most important work is The 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis: Canadian Involvement Reconsidered. |

From Sail to Steam: Recollections of Naval Life $36.92 Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840-1914) was a United States Navy officer, geostrategist, and educator. His ideas on the importance of sea power influenced navies around the world, and helped prompt naval buildups before World War I. Despite his success in the Navy, his skills in actual command of a ship were not exemplary, and a number of vessels under his command were involved in collisions. On the other hand, the books he wrote ashore made him arguably the most influential naval historian. In 1885, he was appointed lecturer in naval history and tactics and the Naval War College. Before entering on his duties, Mahan was pointed to write his future studies and lectures on the influence of sea power. He organized his lectures into his most influential books, The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660-1783 (1890). To a modern reader his emphasis on sea-borne commerce may seem commonplace, but the notion was much more radical in Mahan s time. His other works include: The Interest of America in Sea Power, Present and Future (1897) and Types of Naval Officers (1902). |
